Welcome to this tutorial on using the Date Math feature in Derived Fields. This feature allows you to calculate the difference between two dates or date times, providing valuable insights for your analytics. Let鈥檚 explore how it works. With Date Math, you can measure the time difference between two events, such as the moment a user performs a search and when they place an order. For example, on the screen you鈥檒l see a configuration that calculates the difference in minutes within a session. This setup helps you understand user behavior metrics, like the time taken from search to purchase. You can also apply Date Math more broadly. For instance, you can calculate the time from a user鈥檚 first event to the current moment based on your selected time period. This flexibility allows for tailored analyses across different scopes, such as events, sessions, or individual users. Let鈥檚 walk through the configuration process. In the Derived Fields section, as shown here, start by setting up a condition. For example, we use a case when statement to capture the timestamp of an internal search term if it exists. Otherwise, it returns nothing. Next, we capture the timestamp of an order. Using Date Math, we calculate the difference between these timestamps, taking the first search and first order within a session, and return the result in minutes. You can customize the scope further, choosing between event, session, or person level analysis. Additionally, Date Math supports dynamic date ranges, such as Today for date fields or Now for date time fields. This allows you to measure time differences dynamically, like the duration from a specific event to the present. Thank you for watching this tutorial. We hope you enjoy experimenting with Date Math and Derived Fields to uncover powerful insights.
